A refined hyperspectral imaging technique could give smartphones the ability to determine the chemical makeup of an object by analyzing an image of it.
Hyperspectral technology works by scanning light spectrum of an object to determine its hyperspectal signature chemical makeup. Although this technology has been in use already, it has previously been confined to larger cameras. To minimize the technology, the team from Tel Aviv used MEMS technology to create a much small component that can be used in smartphones and is suitable for mass production.
