A team of researchers from Stanford University have developed an 'anti-solar power cell', using a new technology exploiting the radiative sky cooling effect. This technology allows us to generate electricity at night.
The technology works in the opposite way of a normal solar panel. Even if there is no incoming heat at night, there is outgoing heat, and by pointing the warm solar panel at the night sky, the outgoing heat is radiated as infrared light.
The researchers goal is to find a cheap, sustainable way of providing lighting to cities, developing regions, rural regions, and more. The results are encouraging, as the team claims that their design generates 120 times more energy than what already exists. Furthermore, this could be used to make power from waste heat produces by vehicles.
