An electric generator able to harness the beating of the heart could eliminate the need for batteries to power medical implants.
Developed by a team from the US and China, the implantable triboelectric nanogenerator (iTENG) is able to harness the heart’s physical motion to produce a current. That current is then sent to a computer that controls the monitor, while an external receiving coil captures the date from the monitor. In tests on a live pig, the in vivo system operated successfully for over 72 hours.
