Giving Batteries Space for More Life

Giving Batteries Space for More Life
Jan-08-20
Adding space to lithium-sulfur batteries increases battery life enough to power a smartphone for five days.

The new battery design is the result of research by the team at Monash University, who determined that one reason for battery failure is the stress that builds up due to the overlarge storage capacity of the sulfur electrode. To reduce this stress and the resulting component degradation, the team used the traditional binding agent, but processed in a different way that creates longer, strong bonds between the sulfur particles and carbon matrix. This design provides more space for the battery to expand during charging and accommodate the stress.

The team has filed a patent on the new design, and several companies have already expressed interest in the technology.
