Gold molecules able to produce hydrogen from water much more efficiently could pave the way to improved energy storage.
Developed by a team from Rutgers University, the star-shaped gold molecules can tap into visible and infrared light, not just UV light, which is standard. The gold nanoparticles absorbed the light quickly, transferring the generated electrons to a nearby semiconductor, which then triggered the reaction that produces hydrogen from water with a four times efficiency over standard methods. Hydrogen can store solar energy for use when the sun is not shining.
