An innovative new coating defogs surfaces by heating them with harnessed sunlight.
Changes in temperature or humidity can cause lenses and windows to fog up—decreasing visibility. To help keep things a bit clearer, the team from ETH Zurich created a transparent coating made up of gold nanoparticles embedded in titanium oxide. The nanoparticles absorb the sunlight to heat the surface between 5.4° and 7.2° F warmer, which prevents the condensation that causes fogging. The coating is durable and requires no batteries to operate, making it ideal for wearables such as goggles and glasses as well as windows and windshields.
