Golden Nanogenerator Harvests Electricity from Body Motion

Golden Nanogenerator Harvests Electricity from Body Motion
Feb-15-18
A new wearable nanogenerator could one day help power devices with the flick of a finger.

Developed by teams from the University of Buffalo and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the triboelectric nanogenerator is made up of a small tab of gold and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with thin gold layers around the PDMS layer. Stretching and releasing a gold layer will cause it to crumple, and applying the force again will create friction between the gold layer and PDMS—triggering electrons to move between the gold layers.

The small device was able to power 48 LEDs at once, and the team—who is now working on a battery to complement the technology—claims it is also affordable and easy to manufacture,
