A breakthrough graphene-based membrane for dialysis machines can filter solutions ten times faster than traditional materials.
The membrane, from a team at MIT, is less than one nanometer thick, which allows it filter fluids quickly while still remaining efficient. Rather than forcing the fluid to travel through a series of “tortuous pores,” the MIT membrane’s pores can be set to a specific size, tailoring its ability to its needs and significantly increasing its filtration speed.
