The exterior of the Graphene Helmet has been coated with a layer of graphene flakes, which distribute impacts across a wider area to reduce damage. The graphene also helps dissipate heat, increasing user comfort and reducing heat-related degradation of the helmet's interior components.

The Graphene Helmet was made possible with the support of the Graphene Flagship, which helped fund the project as part of their mission to discover new ways to use and commercialize graphene-enhanced products.
