Graphene Slurry Offers Affordable, Less Toxic Graphene Production

Graphene Slurry Offers Affordable, Less Toxic Graphene Production
Apr-05-18
A new graphene production method opens the door to an affordable way to mass produce high-quality graphene.

Typically, producing graphene requires using shearing forces to exfoliate layer of graphene from graphite before dispersing the layers in large amounts of organic solvent, which is both expensive and environmentally unfriendly.

Developed by a team from the National University of Singapore, the new method triggers flocculation by exfoliating pre-treated graphite under an alkaline condition. This causes the graphene layers to cluster together into a slurry, without needing to increase the solvent volume. The slurry can then be separated into monolayers or stored, and can also be used to 3D-print a conductive graphene aerogel to clean up ocean oil spills.
