An innovative and affordable frame powered by a bucket of water tilts a solar panel to follow the sun.
Created by a team led by Beth Parks, the solar tracking system is made up of a mount that holds the suspended solar cell and a pair of containers—one holding water and one holding rocks. A small hole in the water container allows the water to run out at a specific rate, slowly shifting the weight and causing the panel to rotate east to west. In tests, the sun-tracking system increased the amount of sunlight captured by the panel by 30 percent, which is a significant amount in rural and solar-dependent areas.
