An innovative new gravity separation device could make recycling e-waste more efficient.
While many materials from smartphones can be recycled, the fiberglass and resin circuit boards are typically not recoverable, and are disposed of.
To increase the recyclable potential of devices like smartphones, the team from the University of British Columbia created a method that isolates the fiberglass and resin components using gravity to separate the fiberglass from the resin based on the density of the materials. The recovered fiberglass can be used for insulation and construction, and eventually perhaps even for creating new circuit boards.
