GravityLight is Worth the 'Weight'

GravityLight is Worth the 'Weight'
Dec-13-12
The GravityLight relies on a rarely-tapped natural resource to power its built-in LED light and charging capabilities.

Rather than the conventional alternative energy sources such solar, wind and water, the GravityLight is powered by gravitational force. The system features a 20-pound weight, which is made by filling the fabric bag with rocks or sand and hanging it from the lamp. One heft of the weight will power the lamp for 30 minutes, and the brightness of the lamp can be adjusted to increase the running time. The unit also includes terminals on its front, which can be used to power devices or recharge batteries.

The GravityLight team is currently seeking funding on Indiegogo, and plant to use the funds to distribute at least 1000 of the lamps in Africa and India, and hope the bring the mass production cost down to $5 per unit.
