GreenCan Separates Recyclables by Sound

GreenCan Separates Recyclables by Sound
Oct-06-13
A recycling bin that separates materials based on sound won first place at MHakcks, the University of Michigan’s 36-hour hackathon.

The recycling bin, called GreenCan, was created by a team from the University of Maryland. The bin features a swing top that pivots in two different directions, depending upon the sound an object makes when it hits the lid. Objects that make a ‘ping’ sound, such as cans and bottles, will drop into one side of the bin, while plastics and cups that create a ‘thud’ sound are dropped into the other side.

The GreenCan development team will go on to compete at Greylock Hackfest, which is organized by Greylock Partners.
