Growing Gardens on the Moon

Growing Gardens on the Moon
Dec-07-12
A new technology developed by China’s Astronaut Research and Training Center could allow astronauts to live within a closed system, such as on the Moon.

During the experiment, which took place in the Closed Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS), two subjects lived inside a 10,000 ft3 cabin intended for use in future extraterrestrial bases. The subjects were able to grow four different kinds of vegetables, which provided them with enough food and oxygen to survive while the humans, in turn, produced carbon dioxide for the plants. No water or oxygen was introduced to the system, which has proven it to be sustainable in the long term.

The system could have near-future applications for short missions, reducing the amount of food and oxygen that must be transported even for short missions of a few days.
