3D-printed hair farms could provide an unlimited source of hair follicles to help treat baldness.
Hair transplant surgery has proven itself as a viable method for treating baldness, but you must first have hair to transplant. As an alternative to potentially limited sources, the team from Columbia University developed a way to grow hair follicles in the lab that can then be transplanted to the patient. The process relies on two technologies—a 3D-printed mold idealized for hair follicle growth and a growth factor cocktail that stimulates the follicle cells—and can produce hair follicles at a steady rate, without the need for donors.
