Hairy, nanowire slides capture circulating tumor cells to identify prostate cancer earlier.
While circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are indicators of the presence of cancer, these cells are notoriously difficult to separate from blood. To make this early identifier easy to catch, a team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences grew silica nanowires on common, frosted glass slides, and then attached an adhesion molecule antibody to the nanowires. When a blood sample passes over the slide, the tiny hairs will capture the CTCs with an efficiency 70 percent greater than traditional slides.
