A pocket colposcope that pairs with a smartphone could offer an effective method for cervical cancer screening in remote and impoverished areas.
While typical methods of checking for cervical cancer require expensive equipment and trained staff, the handheld colposcope developed by Duke University researchers is compact, inexpensive, and can be used by the patient herself. The small, slender device is equipped with a camera and light at one end, which will capture an image of the cervix and send it to a paired smartphone.
The team is currently working on ways to use machine learning and image processing to analyze the images automatically.
