Handheld Sensor Tests Plants in the Field

Handheld Sensor Tests Plants in the Field
Nov-04-18
A handheld sensor able to deliver real-time data on plant health could offer a wealth of new information for plant scientists and farmers.

Developed by a team from Purdue University, the handheld hyperspectral-imaging device can scan a plant in less than five seconds to reveal information about its moisture, nutrient and chlorophyll levels. The sensor can also detect the effects of chemical spraying or disease on the plants, allowing farmers to identify changes in the plant quickly, and it can be used in the field—eliminating the need to send a sample to a lab.
