Hands On Search Delivers 3D Results

Hands On Search Delivers 3D Results
Sep-21-13
Designed with the visually impaired in mind, Yahoo Japan has created a device that will print out a small, 3D version of an object in response to a search query.

Part of the “Hands On Search” project, the cloud-shaped kiosk is paired with Yahoo’s search engine, and uses voice recognition to respond to search query. The custom software finds 3D models of the search request on line and the 3D printer immediately prints them as a solid object. If no data matching the request can be locate, a message is sent to the project’s home site, prompting Yahoo Japan to post ads to recruit the data.

The system was created as a way to help bridge the visual and physical worlds, providing the visually impaired with a tactile way to explore different objects.
