Hankook Tyre Challenge Inspired Segmented Tires

Hankook Tyre Challenge Inspired Segmented Tires
Dec-30-14
The recent entries to the Hankook Tyre Design Challenge include tires with individually inflated segments and sections that separate for better traction.

The Hankook challenge asks students to design feasible tires for futuristic cars that still adhere to a variety of performance and design standards.

Designed for use in Dakar-style races, the First Place Winner Darar Tire concept consists of interlocking hexagonal blocks that will spread apart for greater traction when necessary. Each segment can also be individually replaced if punctured. Second place went to the Vent Tyre, which features horizontal rubber blades that work like a turbine to spin water away from the road and reduce hydroplaning, and Third was received by Konzept Winter, a winter-specific tire with 14 hinged polyurethane segments that will spread apart the increase the vehicle's clearance.
