Harnessing Tornado Energy

Harnessing Tornado Energy
Dec-21-12
Look out Toto—the startup AVEtec has received funding to create their own tornadoes, which can be used to drive multiple turbines and generate power with virtually no carbon footprint.

The process, developed by Louis Michaud, uses the excess heat energy produced by conventional power plants. The heat is blown by fans into a hollow cylindrical tower at a sharp angle, creating a circular air current that will increase in strength as it rises higher. Turbines at the base of the vortex would harness the wind power to generate energy at costs as low as 3 cents per kW hour, which is less than the 4 or 5 cents for conventional coal plants. The vortexes could also be created using solar panels or warm water.

The team is currently building a 131-foot tall, 26-foot diameter working prototype in Ontario, which could produce a 1-foot diameter vortex able to drive a small turbine.
