A new metamaterial able to harvest energy from heat could offer a new source of energy production.
Developed at Duke University, the tiny thermophotovoltaic device is made from a metamaterial created by the team, which is able to absorb and emit infrared wavelengths. The system can be used at room temperature, which opens the door to a wider range of applications than conventional waste heat harvesters.
According to Willie J. Padilla of Duke University, the metamaterial device “could provide a tailored way to collect and use energy from heat.”
