Headset Relieves Self-Driving Motion Sickness

Headset Relieves Self-Driving Motion Sickness
Jan-23-18
A new, forward-looking headset aims to help relieve passengers of motion sickness in self-driving cars.

Developed by a team from the University of Michigan, the patented system works by eliminating the sickness-inducing conflict between the “vestibular and visual inputs” felt by passengers who may not be watching the road. The system relies on exposing the rider to light stimuli that mimic the speed and motion of the vehicle, helping alleviate the motion sickness symptoms similar to the way looking out a window can help.

The team believes that the system could also be built into the car’s own cabin, eliminating the need for a headset at all.
