Healing Lamp Treats Chronic Ulcers

Healing Lamp Treats Chronic Ulcers
Jul-27-18
A healing lamp able to treat chronic ulcers could offer an alternative to bandages and medication.

Developed by a team led by Dr. Michael Hughes, the healing light device is made up of thirty-two bulbs that emit a combination of ultraviolet, red and infrared light. During tests on the device’s effectiveness, the team treated volunteers with systemic sclerosis, which causes the immune system to attack the body’s fingers and toes. The results were promising, with just fifteen minutes of light therapy twice a week for three weeks showing an 83 percent average improvement.

The team believes the treatment works due to the different abilities of the light: ultraviolet light kills bacteria and reduces inflammation, red light encourages blood circulation and stimulates collagen production, while infrared light increased blood and oxygen flow.
