Heart Patches Keep the Heart Beating

Heart Patches Keep the Heart Beating
Jun-04-19
Repair patches made from heart tissue could be implanted on the heart to replace damaged tissue and ensure proper pumping.

Developed by a team from Imperial College London, the cardiac tissue patches are made up of stem cells that were separated into cardiomyocytes. The small patches, about the size of a coin, are placed on the damaged area of the heart after a heart attack, where they will expand in size with each contraction to help compensate for any reduction in the heart’s pumping ability.

The patches are now set to begin human trials.
