Hedgehog-Inspired Liners Help Prevent Concussions

Hedgehog-Inspired Liners Help Prevent Concussions
Jan-07-17
The Hedgemon helmet liners were inspired by the spines of the hedgehog, which protect the creature from its frequent falls.

According to the team, a concussion can occur when the brain suffers a rotational movement from an off-kilter hit—an impact none of today’s helmets are designed to absorb. To help fill this gap, the Hedgemon liners are meant to be installed as the middle layer in a helmet, where the liner’s quills will bend and twist individually to reduce the impact that would cause the brain to rotate inside the skull.

Hedgehog are frequent fallers, often plummeting from trees to escape predators, or simply because falling down is faster than climbing.
