Helping the Homeless Keep Their Appointments

Helping the Homeless Keep Their Appointments
Nov-28-12
The PAT (Personal Appointment Ticketing) service was designed to help improve the quality of life of homeless people by making it easier for them to remember their appointments.

While many homeless people benefit from the array of services provided for them, it can be difficult for them to keep track of upcoming visits. The PAT service helps automate the process through an internet-connected base station that features a small thermal printer. Each person on the service is given a plastic wristband with an RFID tag, which communicates with the online database to access their personal appointment schedule and print out a reminder. The base stations could be located at strategic points, such as homeless shelters and aid stations.

The PAT project is part of the Patchworks project, which has the goal of understanding and meeting the health and communication needs of homeless people.
