Hijacked sperm could be put to work delivering chemotherapy drugs to cervical cancer tumors.
The new technology is being explored by Haifeng Xu and his team at the Leibniz Institute in Germany. Sperm cells loaded with a common chemotherapy agent were outfitted with tiny magnetic harnesses and guided by magnets to the target cancer tumors. After arriving at their destination, the harnesses were opened, releasing the sperm that then swam into the tumor to deliver their cargo of drugs.
