Holograms Could Let Firefighters See Through Fire

Holograms Could Let Firefighters See Through Fire
Mar-04-13
A digital imaging system could give firefighters the ability to see through heat and smoke, making it easier to detect objects and people.

Although firefighters can use infrared cameras to spot warm bodies, the cameras are often overwhelmed by the heat from extremely hot fires. The new system, developed by a team in Italy, uses digital imaging to capture infrared signals in 3D and covert them in real time to holographic video. The device features an infrared laser, which is able to penetrate a smoke-filled room and has a longer wavelength—allowing it to recombine to from large holograms. To turn the static image into video, the laser sends out a pulse of beams that combine to create the 3D image.
