The innovative HoMe composite foam combines the qualities of wood and metal, and could have applications in the automotive industry.
Developed by the team from Fraunhofer, the HoMe foam is built upon the team’s earlier exploration into wood-based foam, which was made from processed waste wood. To create the wood/metal hybrid foam, the team first built open-cell metal ‘sponges’ and poured the processed wood froth into them, ensuring each cavity was filled. After drying, the resulting wood/metal HoMe composite can provide the thermal and acoustic insulation of foam along with increased flexibility and structural support.
