The thumb-worn Hoope ring, with its built in needle and lab-on-a-chip, offers a more private option. The ring is equipped with a single-use retractable needle that pops into place at the press of a button, and a pulse generator to numb the skin and ease the discomfort of the needle prick. Once the blood has been collected, it flows through a system of microfliuidic channels that will capture any antibodies linked to the targeted disease, causing an electrochemical reaction that will trigger the device to send the diagnosis to a paired smartphone.
