Hybrid Car from Puegot Will Run on Compressed Air

Hybrid Car from Puegot Will Run on Compressed Air
Jan-27-13
A new hybrid car in the works from Puegot Citroen does away with batteries by replacing them with air.

The Hybrid Air car, expected to be released in 2016, uses compressed air to store energy instead of batteries. The system features a hydraulic pump/motor that recovers the energy generated by the internal combustion engine (ICE) and deceleration and stores it in the form of compressed air. An electronic management system will automatically adjust the system based on need, switching from the ICE at high speeds to air only at speeds below 43 mph. When the compressed air needs to be supplied or more power is needed at a lower speed, the system will operate in combined mode.

According to the developers, people who use their car mostly in town at low speeds will be able to operate on air power alone 60 to 80 percent of the time.

I had this idea long ago and intended to test it on a Citroen 2CV but gave up when I found that air as an energy factor is quite inefficient and economically it doesn't pay out. My testing concept was to use 2 air motors in the front wheels (converted hubs) which work as compressors during braking and as motors to start/accelerate the car after stops. The components are cheap and lightweight and the switchover from feeding and consuming can be controlled by sensors and valves. At least in cities with constant stop and go most of the motion energy normally wasted by braking could be recovered resulting in savings of 50% and more. As a paid research job I would do it but just for fun it's too much.

MDI Luxembourg has already developed this technology of automobiles running on compressed air in 1997 and the licence has been sold to 400 companies across the world for Euro 30000/. I am expecting the licence holder in India M/s. TATA Motors will market their car in 2014.
