Hybrid Powertrain Relies on Micro-Turbines

Hybrid Powertrain Relies on Micro-Turbines
Mar-01-16
A Beijing car manufacturer has debuted a hybrid powertrain system for automobiles that extends its range with the help of micro-turbines.

The system, called Turbine-Recharging Electric Vehicle (TREV), was designed by the R&D firm TechRules, and was demonstrated on a concept “supercar.” The turbine is powered by aviation fuel and used to drive a generator which in turn charges the battery that drives the traction motors. The system’s turbine coverts chemical energy into electrical energy, which distinguishes it from other turbine-based automotive powertrains, and its carbon fiber design keeps the weight low. According to the team, the system can charge the vehicle’s battery pack in 40 minutes.

While the TREV system is currently being tested in track-based ‘supercars,’ the team plans to eventually develop a more affordable general use car for the average consumer.
