Hybrid Solar Cell Works Rain or Shine

Hybrid Solar Cell Works Rain or Shine
Mar-11-18
Researchers have created a hybrid solar cell able to generate electricity from sunlight or raindrops.

The solar cell gets its hybrid powers from the addition of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) in the form of two polymer layers—one made of PDMS and one of PEDOT:PSS. To increase the effectiveness of the material, the team embedded grooves on the polymers by imprinting them with standard DVDs. The result was a thin, transparent TENG layer able to generate power from the pressure of raindrops while also allowing the solar panel below to harvest energy on sunny days.
