Hydrogel Harvests Fresh Water with Sunlight

Jul-13-19 A hydrogel able to harvest fresh water from ocean air offers a new source of water for arid coastal regions.

The hydrogel was created by a team from the National University of Singapore using a zinc-based material able to absorb more than four times its weight in water. In tests, the gel was placed within devices that floated on the ocean surface, where it collected water vapor created by evaporation that was then harvested by placing the gel in a glass box in the sunlight.

Rather than relying on electricity, the hydrogel will release the stored water when heated to temperatures between 113 and 122°F and can also be reused more than 1000 times.
