Implant Plasma Treatment Encourages Bone Growth

Implant Plasma Treatment Encourages Bone Growth
Dec-09-18
A new plasma treatment for 3D-printed bone implants improves the bonding of bone-forming cells.

Typical bone implants are subjected to a surface treatment to encourage cell growth, but those treatments are superficial and offer limited penetration. To increase the amount of cell growth on biodegradable implants, the team from Fraunhofer used a jet of cold plasma to deliver reactive amino groups directly onto the plastic as it leaves the printer. The reactive groups provide an attractive surface for bone cells, eliminating the need for chemical pretreatment solvents while promoting a quick and healthy growth of replacement native tissue.
