Implantable Drug Delivery Device Can Target Tumors

Implantable Drug Delivery Device Can Target Tumors
Dec-04-16
Researchers have developed an implantable drug delivery device that can monitor the body’s health while also delivering drugs at a steady dose.

The device, from a team at the Houston Methodist Research Institute, was originally created to deliver HIV medication at a steady rate. Now the device has evolved to a smaller version that can be implanted in the body to deliver medication directly to a tumor, without needing to disperse the drugs throughout the body.

The team believes the device could one day be used to deliver other types of medication, such as cortisone, or even be used in immunotherapy—encouraging the body to recognize cancer cells and destroy them on its own.
