Implantable Freedom System Relieves Chronic Pain

Implantable Freedom System Relieves Chronic Pain
Dec-06-14
Developed to alleviate chronic pain, the wireless Freedom spinal cord stimulation system can be implanted near the spinal nerves using a standard needle.

Neurostimulation is a proven method to combat pain, but current neurostimulator are relatively large, about the size of a pacemaker. In comparison, Stimwave Technologies' Freedom implant is tiny and self-contained, encasing its set of wires and miniature receiver within in its lead body. Once the device has been injected in the patient, small metal electrodes near the tip will generate electricity that blocks the pain signals from the spinal cord nerves. Power to the Freedom implant is supplied wirelessly via an external transmitter.
