Implanted Neural Stimulator Offers Opioid Alternative

Implanted Neural Stimulator Offers Opioid Alternative
Dec-13-17
A tiny, implantable wireless neural stimulator from Draper Labs could offer a new way to treat chronic pain without opioids.

The implantable device, still in the proof-of-concept phase, replaces batteries with an external induction-based power system. This simplification of the power delivery system allows the device to operate on only a half-volt, and eliminates the need for follow-up surgeries to replace the batteries.

The entire unit is wrapped in medical grade epoxy, resulting in an implantable stimulator that, according to Daniel Freeman, senior research engineer and electrophysiologist at Draper, could have “any number of applications in the peripheral nervous system.”
