A new swallowable battery powered by the stomach’s acid could offer a safer alternative to current options.
Developed by a team from MIT, the battery generates its power with a pair of zinc and copper electrodes, which were attached to the exterior of an ingestible device carrying a temperature sensor and transmitter. When tested in the stomachs of pigs, the device was able to take and send temperature readings every twelve seconds to a receiver more than six feet away.
