Researchers have developed an injectable polymer that could allow diabetics to go several weeks without an insulin injection.
The biopolymer is made up of an elastin-like polypeptide able to fuse with GPL1—the molecule that triggers the pancreas to release insulin. The liquid polymer will react to body heat when injected, forming a gel that will slowly release its cargo of medicine into the body. In tests on monkeys, a single injection was shown to regulate glucose levels for more than two weeks.
The team also believes the polymer could have other applications, such as a sustained delivery of pain medications for chronic pain.
