The smart textile material Varstiff hardens when a vacuum is applied to form a rigid cast as stiff as plaster of Paris.
Designed by Tecnalia, the material can be adapted to fit any part of the body. Its soft form allows it to be slipped under or around the victim, where it can then stiffened by applying a vacuum to its hose. This makes it easier to immobilize an area of the victim’s body without the need to move the person.
Besides the medical applications, the Varstiff material could also be used to create flexible luggage racks, custom-fit car seats or camping gear.
