iTube Checks Foods for Peanuts

iTube Checks Foods for Peanuts
Dec-18-12
The iTube makes it possible to check foods for allergens with a smartphone while providing the same level of sensitivity as a laboratory test.

To use the iTube, a sample of the food to be tested is first ground up, mixed with hot water and an extraction solvent, and then mixed with chemical reagents. The sample and a control tube are placed in the device and lit by LEDs, where they are measured optically by the phone’s camera and analyzed by an app that compares the two to determine the allergen concentration. The device is able to quantify how much of an allergen is in a sample, and can test for a variety of allergens including peanuts, eggs and gluten.
