To help increase trust in driverless cars, Jaguar has added eyes to a self-driving pod to let it communicate with pedestrians.
Much like how a human might make eye contact with the driver of a car before they cross the road, the JLR self-driving pods can ‘look’ at the person with a pair of LED eyes. The team is currently testing the pods to see how much they affect a pedestrian's sense of safety.
According to Pete Bennett, Future Mobility research manager at Jaguar Land Rover, “We want to know if it is beneficial to provide humans with information about a vehicle’s intentions or whether simply letting a pedestrian know it has been recognized is enough to improve confidence.”
