A cost-effective, Sign Language translator able to translate sign language into spoken and written language could soon offer new communication options to the deaf.
Microsoft researchers in China developed the prototype Kinect Sign Language Translator, which is able to understand sign language gestures and convert them to spoken and written language in real-time. The system will also provide a translation for the deaf participant, translating the hearing person’s spoken words into sign language delivered by an on-screen avatar.
Besides making communication more possible for the deaf and hearing, the system could also open up new job opportunities for the deaf.
