Lab-Grown Heart Speeds Medical Testing
Jan-23-18
Lab-grown human heart tissue from Tara Biosystems could aid in the development of medications without the need for animal testing.

The heart tissue is grown from stem cells, and is currently being used primarily to test the toxicity of medications, allowing useful—and safe—drugs to make it to market faster. The heart tissue can test for an array of drug effects, including electrical, structural and biological, and the team’s standardized method of producing the tissue ensures the same results each time.

According to Tara’s CEO Misti Ushio, the company hopes to expand the technology to include personalized heart tissue for testing, allowing for more individualized results.
