Being called an "optical dog's nose," a laser breathalyzer able to detect the molecular concentration of a gas could lead to a faster and non-invasive way to screen people for a variety of illnesses.
Created by a team from the University of Adelaide, the laser-based system uses optical spectroscopy to detect the different molecules in a sample of gas. Since the molecules are by-products of processes in the body, different concentrations of molecules can indicate disease, such as asthma or diabetes, even before symptoms begin to show.
