Laser Diode System Detects Olive Oil Fraud

Laser Diode System Detects Olive Oil Fraud
Dec-27-18
A new invention able to identify counterfeit olive oils could help ensure consumers are buying the quality of oil they expect.

Developed by teams from Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the Scintillon Institute, the sensor system relies on laser diodes to detect the difference in fluorescence between pure olive oils and oils that have been mixed with a lesser quality version. The inexpensive system is both portable and easy to use, allowing for on-site analysis in real time.
