European scientists are developing a laser system that can carve tiny spike structures into sheet metal or plastic – mimicking the rough texture of a shark's skin that prevents microorganisms from adhering to it.
It is hoped that this technology will be able to replace ship hull coatings that are used to stop algae and barnacles from clinging to hulls and slowing them down. Although effective, these coatings are expensive, and can be harmful to the environment.
These ultrafast lasers can ablate more than 150mm
3 in one minute.
